Party Nails

Party Nails

Let's get this straight: we're not against mixing and matching nail colors...so long as it's done in a tasteful way. These "party nails" from Kaley Cuoco don't quite fit the bill. We get that she was trying to coordinate with her bright clutch, but when you mix such drastically different colors--especially at a formal event--it comes off looking a bit tacky. Come January, stick to colors in a similar palette for a chicer look.

Metallic Eyeshadow

Metallic Eyeshadow

Eyes, and lips, and nails, oh my! Metallics were everywhere this year and there's nothing we loved more than a sultry metallic eyeshadow. Consider it the smoky eye's sexier cousin, who's here to stay for 2012!

Super Saturated Lips

Super Saturated Lips

A good bold lip can do wonders for a look, but these super-saturated pouts are a bit melodramatic. Rachel McAdams' deep wine lipstick comes off as more Interview With The Vampire than we'd like for 2012.

You Can't Wear Lipstick Without Lip Liner

You Can't Wear Lipstick Without Lip Liner

Whoever said you can't rock lipstick without a lip liner was probably the type of kid who couldn't color in between the lines. These days, lipsticks can hang all on their own, without any help--check out Elizabeth Olsen's liner-free lips for proof. Just make sure you have the proper tools, to prevent your color from running. "Invest in a quality lip brush that glides color on and keeps its shape," says Stila Pro Artist Sarah Lucero. "Use it like a flat paint brush and start the application by loading color on the center lower lip and then pull out and perfect it at lip line from there."

You Can't Wear a Smoky Eye And A Bold Lip

You Can't Wear a Smoky Eye And A Bold Lip

The secret to pulling off Taylor Swift's fierce smoky eye and bold lips? Keep the rest of your makeup sheer and focus on your skin. "Wear a tinted moisturizer and skip powder if you can," Lucero says. "Complexion needs to be a bit dewy and very touchable, so less is more."

Winged Eyeliner

Winged Eyeliner

With so many retro-inspired collections popping up on the runways this season (Chris Benz SS'12, anyone?) it's no surprise that winged eyeliner is experiencing a full-blown revival. Take a cue for 2012 from winged eyeliner pro, Lauren Conrad, by rocking the '60s makeup trend with a slightly less exaggerated look that's versatile for day and night.

Bright Eyeliner

Bright Eyeliner

Although it was fun to mix things up with bright and wacky eyeliners earlier this year, unfortunately this trend just won't cut it in 2012. An electric blue like Kelly Rowland's is great for the runway and magazines, but it falls short in real life. Unless you're a model with chiseled cheekbones and big, doe-like eyes, this trend just comes off as gimmicky and impractical.

Top Knots

Top Knots

Whoever said diamonds are a girl's best friend, must not have tried a topknot. A super easy hairstyle that anyone, including us curly girls, can do in one fell swoop and look uber-chic? Now, that's a girl's best friend. And one that'll be sticking with us straight into the New Year.

Feather Extensions

Feather Extensions

Ah, the feather extensions. The unisex hair accessory that caused quite a stir this year. When Bella Thorne and Steven Tyler are wearing the same trend, you know it's big. Thankfully though, the furry/creepy hair accessory won't be sticking around too much longer. To put it in terms Tyler would understand: It's a one-hit wonder.

Headband Braids

Headband Braids

Braided hairstyles will never go out of style, however the way the braid is incorporated will always change. Our vote for the breakout braid this year is this headband one from Brooklyn Decker. The loose hairstyle keeps the face looking soft and pretty by not pulling too much tension from the front. We give it a big thumbs-up for 2012.
